As the number of cases involving child protection soar, Prime Minister David Cameron’s answer is to create an ideologically driven campaign for wholesale privatisation. Failing children’s services will now be taken over, while his government simultaneously makes deeper cuts into those services.
Earlier this year Ofsted was attacked in a report that claimed its inspection of children’s services was outdated and even harmed the children it was trying to protect.
The social work profession has come under a lot of pressure recently as social workers find themselves caught up in damaging public debates about their role in keeping children and families safe.
It’s critical we begin extending and accelerating reforms to the quality of children’s social work practice and leadership. The need to ‘upskill’ the social work profession and the work we do with partners is paramount.
